A mistake…an uh-oh…a mishap…wasn’t suppose to happen…a surprise…an oops…a boo-boo…an accident. That is what the world would have us believe. This is how some folks look at unexpected babies. “I am your Creator. You were in my care even before you were born.” Isaiah 44:2 This is what God tells us. He never makes mistakes, never does anything accidentally, and as was pointed out in a sermon I heard today, found perfection in day six of creation as he made mankind. He looked around and saw that everything was very good and then the next day He rested.
When I think on these things, someone comes to mind…someone very small. Sadie Emogene Thomas arrived in my life definitely on God’s timing, not mine. He made her presence known to me very early in her existence. I remember waking one late summer morning with an undeniable feeling…around nine months later I met baby Sadie. She is named for the only grandmother that Michael remembers…his “Monk-Mama”. Her middle name is in honor of my maternal grandmother, Emogene Graham Dixon, who visits with Sadie each chance she gets. She was a combination of her brother and sister when she arrived, even though most thought she favored her big brother the most. She was very peaceful and quiet, unannoyed by the noise that exists in a house already so full of life and laughter. As a baby her favorite thing was to be held…especially by me. This was the first clue that she was going to be a “mama’s girl”...a title that still rings true as she grows.
These days Sadie brings lots of sweetness and joy to our home. She is very animated, inquisitive, and a gal of few words. Her brother and sister like to take good care of her, creating an adoration for them that makes a heart very happy. She gives kisses unexpectedly and pats my back when I hold her. She insists wearing undies over her diaper around the house, and likes to go barefoot wherever she goes. Sadie’s favorite things include a stuffed baby frog, a passy at naptime, the song “Jesus Loves Me”, mealtime, playing “giddy up”, visits with Nanny and Grandmommy, our dog Smokey, welcoming dad at the door, snuggling with me, and playing a form of peek-a-boo that we call “Where Is Sadie?”.
Sadie was no accident at all…just unexpected by her parents…perfectly planned by her Creator. She came on His timing, in a time I believe He knew that someone was going to need her. He knew that even at a very young age she was going to make a huge difference in someone’s life. That someone is her mother. I ponder many things in my heart…store things up…anticipate sharing things with my children. One day, I look forward to telling Sadie about how God’s timing is perfect and how she is a living example of that.
